Lc_high_school_confidential_3_la00130

A tough kid comes to a new high school and begins muscling his way into the drug scene. As he moves his way up the ladder, a schoolteacher tries to reform him, his aunt tries to seduce him, and the “weedheads” are eager to use his newly found enterprise, but he has his own agenda. After an altercation involving fast cars, hidden drugs, and police, he’s accepted by the drug kingpin and is off into the big leagues. A typical morality play of the era, filled with a naive view of drugs, nihilistic beat poetry, and some incredible ’50s slang.

Cape Breton Islanders Remember The TV Series Highway Patrol

Highway Patrol is a syndicated action crime drama series that aired from 1955-1959. The series was syndicated by Ziv TV.

Highway Patrol stars Broderick Crawford as Dan Mathews, the gruff and dedicated head of a police force in an unidentified Western state. A signature shot of the series is fedora-wearing Mathews barking “21-50 to headquarters”, “10-4”, and other rapid-fire dialogue into a radio microphone as he leans against the door of his black and white patrol car (call sign “21-50”).

There are no other regular cast members, but some actors appear several times, sometimes in different roles. William Boyett, later Sgt. MacDonald in Adam-12, made numerous appearances as Sgt. Ken Williams and Officer Johnson. Art Gilmore, who played Lieutenant (later Captain) Moore on Adam-12, was the show’s never-seen narrator. Ron Foster appeared twenty-four times on the series, mostly in the role of young Officer Garvey. Future movie and TV star Stuart Whitman appeared in 13 episodes as Sergeant Walters. Other actors making multiple appearances include Guy Williams (Zorro, Lost in Space), Leonard Nimoy, (Star Trek), Kirk Alyn (Superman in movie serials) and Ed Nelson (Peyton Place). Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry is credited with writing five episodes, sometimes using pseudonym “Robert Wesley”. Future producer Quinn Martin (The Untouchables, The Fugitive, Barnaby Jones, The FBI, The Streets of San Francisco) served as sound supervisor.

Highway Patrol is famous for its location shooting in rural and desert areas of southern California, today providing a historic look at the mid-50s. While Highway Patrol is described in Art Gilmore’s documentary-style narration as a state police agency, the actual state is never stated, and mentioned towns have simple names like “Midvale”. In the few episodes where real place names are used (for example, the second-season episode “Hired Killer” prominently features the Chatsworth, California train station in its opening scene), the state’s name is simply elided.[1] Mathews frequently uses a wall map to track criminals; the map appears to be central-east Oregon, with the towns of Bend and Redmond on the map’s left.

In the early seasons the series got technical assistance from California Highway Patrol (CHP), which clearly is the model. The Buick, Dodge and Mercury sedans used as patrol cars are almost identical to the mid-50s CHP fleet except for the door emblem. Officer uniforms are the CHP style of the day. However, CHP is a true highway patrol, while the TV series is more concerned with chasing criminals than enforcing driving laws.

The Highway Patrol show radio call signs are CHP-style, except CHP uses the first part to indicate the geographic region/office. Dan Mathews’ “21-50” would be a CHP unit at office 21, which is in Napa County, California. However the show mixes a variety of office prefixes, so true CHP regions don’t apply; one episode has “21-50” working with “34-27” (CHP for San Francisco) and “36-32” (CHP for Red Bluff) to chase the bad guys around a single valley.

The show’s brassy music made such an impact that it was featured on several record albums of TV show themes.

Episodes conclude with an ironic comment on the crime or criminal by Mathews. Then, just before the final credits, Crawford faces the camera: “See the Highway Patrol in action next week. Until then remember, leave your blood at the Red Cross, not on the highway. This is Broderick Crawford saying, see you next week.”

When asked why the popular show ended, Broderick Crawford said, “We ran out of crimes.”

Like most Ziv series, Highway Patrol repeats were syndicated for many years. The rights to all 156 episodes are held by MGM Television and in 2011 air on This TV.

Astronomy Picture of the Day for Cape Breton Islanders-Thursday 28 April 2011

Regulusmarsmichelberger900

Explanation: On June 4, 2010 Regulus, alpha star of the constellation Leo, and wandering planet Mars were at about the same apparent brightness, separated on the sky by 1.5 degrees. An ingenious and creative 10 second exposure from a swinging camera recorded these gyrating trails of the celestial pairing. Can you tell which trail belongs to the star and which to the planet? Hint: atmospheric turbulence causes the image of the star to scintillate or vary in brightness and color more readily than the planet. The scintillation is more pronounced because the star is effectively a point source of light seen as a narrow bundle of light rays. Rapidly changing refraction due to turbulence along the line of sight affects different colors of light by different amounts and generally produces a twinkling effect for stars. But Mars is much closer than the distant stars and an extended source of light. Though tiny, its disk is seen as a bundle of light rays that is substantially broader compared to a star’s and so, on average, less affected by small scale turbulence. The result is the varied, rainbow like trail for Regulus (left) and the steadier, consistently reddish trail for Mars.
