“Commercial Street was all but deserted as the bus rounded the corner and stopped in front of Eaton’s. It was after midnight and all the passengers had departed in Sydney. Except for a few miners picked up along the way I was the only long distance traveller. They were not expecting me. They knew I was coming but they didn’t know the day of my arrival. I shivered a little as I picked up the suitcase and walked through town, past Knox Church, the local Y, Vihos Sweets and the Bay Motors. I stopped on the Iron Bridge and gazed out on the open harbour.”
The reading is an exerpt taken from the works of Audrey Currie Newton.
