Canada agrees to acquire the Canadian section of the Alaska Highway, including telephone systems, buildings and other assets, for $108 million (1,221 miles at $88,000 a mile); 2,450-kilometre highway originally cost US$140 million to build, as a wartime supply route in case of Japanese invasion of North America. singer, pianist, keyboardist, drummer, of The Band, was born on this day at Stratford, Ontario in 1943; dies by his own hand in a Florida motel room Oct. 28, 1986, to universal sadness; buried in Stratford. Also Bernard Marcel ‘Bernie’ Parent 1945-
hockey player, was born on this day at Montreal in 1945. A superb goaltender, Parent led the Philadelphia Flyers to 2 Stanley Cups as playoff MVP (1974,75); he was a 2-time Vezina Trophy winner and holds the NHL record for season wins (47 in 1973-74).

Also Louis Applebaum 1918-
composer, arts administrator, was born on this day at Toronto in 1918. In 1985, Applebaum co-chaired the Federal Cultural Policy Review Committee with Jacques Hébert.

Also Nanette Bordeaux 1911-1956
actress, was born on this day at St-Georges Quebec in 1911; died Beverly Hills, California Sept 20 1956. Bordeaux starred in several Three Stooges movies in the 1950s.

Also Allan Dwan 1885-1981
film actor, director, was born on this day at Toronto in 1885; died in California Dec 2, 1981 at age 96. Dwan directed almost 1850 films, from 1911 on, including several Shirley temple flics, including Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Peter Bogdanovich wrote a 1971 biography, Allan Dwan: The Last Pioneer.

Also Margaret (Mary) Anglin 1876-1958
actress, was born on this day at Ottawa in 1876; died in Toronto Jan 7, 1958. Anglin was one of the most brilliant performers of her day, shining in Greek tragedies, Shakespearean plays, or contemporary dramas.

Also Jake Gaudaur Sr. 1858-1937
rower, was born on this day at Toronto in 1858; died Oct 11 1937. In 1892 Gaudaur and his partner F. Hosmer defeated Ned Hanlan and another Torontonian William O’Connor for the double sculls championship of the world, a title they won several more times. At age 38, Gaudaur raced 8 time world champion Jim Stanbury and won an easy victory on the Thames course; he held the world single sculls title for another four years.

Capers Make Their Own Campbell’s Vegetable Beef Soup

Campbell’s Vegetable Beef Soup Recipe

Ingredients:
2-3 pounds cubed beef
1/4 cup butter
3 quarts water
1 teaspoon freshly-ground black pepper
1 tablespoon salt
1 1/2 cups chopped carrots
3 medium potatoes
1 cup chopped celery
1/4 cup dried onions
1/2 cup barley
6 cubes beef stock

Cooking Directions:
Peel then cube the potatoes.
Brown meat in butter.
Add all other ingredients.

Option 1:
Cook in a pressure cooker for 20 minutes.

Option 2:
Simmer in a crockpot on low for several hours

Option 3:
Cook in a large pot on the stove over low heat for 2 to 3 hours.
